What is the MJLC study group?
Our study group is a weekly facilitated discussion about topics pertaining to the carceral state and liberation, with overarching themes corresponding to our bi-annual journal publication. It is a brave space to share ideas, ask questions, and most importantly, to foster community. We encourage a relaxed, approachable yet thought-provoking atmosphere. What makes the MJLC study group unique is that the topics are guided by the interest of the members who attend each week, so your participation influences which discussions take place.
By inviting community members to facilitate topics important to them, we hope to impart a sense of collective solidarity each week. Whether that is rooted in reassurance of why you and I fight for liberation, a moment of consciousness, anger about the systems we live under, or hope for the future, the MJLC study group serves as a catalyst for both education and action.
We encourage members to lean into debate and conflicting perspectives each week, understanding that integrating our different viewpoints is necessary for advancing collective liberation. Additionally, while not required, we will provide opportunities to prepare for discussions in advance, such as recommended readings or podcasts. While acknowledging our limitations operating within the collegiate pillar of the imperial core, the MJLC study group nonetheless aspires to offer a guided space for making sense of the carceral state and strategizing how to dismantle it.
Study group is every week on Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m. in the MJLC office in 333 East Campus Mall, room 3147. Meetings can be attended sporadically if needed since each week covers a different topic; however, it is recommended to attend consistently when possible since topics are often closely linked to one another under a comprehensive theme.
Join our study group newsletter to get updated weekly on recaps of the past week’s meeting, a preview of the upcoming one with the optional homework, and other MJLC-related updates.
Weeks skipped for holidays and school breaks will be announced in-person at study group and online via the study group newsletter.
